The death toll from a raid carried out by attackers from South Sudan in western Ethiopia has risen to 208 people, an Ethiopian official said, adding that 108 children were kidnapped.

By Sunday afternoon, the number had risen to “208 dead and 75 people wounded” from a figure of 140 a day earlier, government spokesman Getachew Reda told the Reuters news agency.

Women and children were among the dead, he said, adding that the assailants had also taken 2,000 head of livestock.

“Ethiopian Defence Forces are taking measures. They are closing in on the attackers,” Getachew said.

The attack happened on Friday in the Horn of Africa nation’s Gambela region which, alongside a neighbouring province, hosts more than 284,000 South Sudanese refugees who have fled a conflict in that country.

Getachew earlier told Al Jazeera that Ethiopian forces had killed 60 of the attackers and would cross the border into South Sudan to pursue the assailants if necessary.

Saturday night was a special moment for the city of Gainesville when documentary filmmaker Johnathan Paul screened his long awaited film “The Great Hanging” at the historic State Theater. The documentary details events that transpired in Gainesville during October 1862, when Civil War tensions escalated to the point of vigilante mob violence taking the lives of 42 local men.

Thought by many to be an ugly chapter in the early years of Gainesville’s growth on the frontier of North Texas, The Great Hanging has long been a topic of taboo and controversy. However, director Johnathan Paul, who was raised in Gainesville, tells the story from an objective and unbiased look at history. Paul says, “as a documentarian it was not his responsibility to make judgement, but rather to tell the story together as best as can be done with the historical evidence available.”

The Great Hanging movie interweaves historical re-enactments with interviews from the experts, while interspersed with footage from NCTC’s annual stage reading of “October Mourning” by Dr. Pat Ledbetter. The documentary is supported by the interviews and academic work of the foremost scholar on the subject, Dr. Rick McCaslin, whose book “Tainted Breeze” has opened many windows into the past to help us paint a picture of what actually transpired in 1862.

Attendance was such that a second screening had to follow because the first viewing resulted in a packed house, with virtually every seat in the theater filled. A special event preceded the show, in support of the Great Hanging Memorial Foundation, whose members were also in attendance, many of whom are the direct descendants of those who lost their lives during the incident.

Paul, and his Datalus Pictures, will be taking the film on a festival run, as well as surveying the horizon for potential distribution and market outlets. While the film is not available to view currently, there is talk of a Kickstarter campaign in the works where donors will have the opportunity to pledge support in exchange for a DVD of the film.

As McCaslin has consistently pointed out the purpose of knowing our history and looking at it from an objective lens, is not to accuse or condemn, but rather to learn and understand our mistakes so that we are not doomed to repeat them.
